Mexico Cuba 2006

Introduction

This is a holiday idea that I have been whinging on about for some time now after the thouroughly excellent times I had in Peru and Egypt . The thought behind Mexico & Cuba 2006 is to combine the latin flavours of central america through the tequilla & salsa music with the ancient wonder of the pyramids. At the time of writing (February 2006) this is still simply an idea so the purpose of this page is to do some perelimenary investigation into whather the whole idea is possible at all --Tom

Possible Stumbling Blocks

  • VISAs and beurocracy in and out of cuba
  • Moving around
  • Hurricanes
  • Picking a date
  • Getting annual leave
  • Who is coming anyway
  • Costs

Plan

A) Fly in to Mexico city, travel down to cancun (coach/rail) and over to Havana (Boat/Plane.)

B) Do the whole thing the other way round if the flights are a lot cheaper.

ToDo

Who is coming

  • Tom
  • Marc
  • Matt "Provisionally, i am up for it"

When we are going

  • Hurricanes
  • Weather

The weather in central america is pretty good all year round but hurricane season runs from August until October so something around November may be a good time as the weather here is getting pretty depressing by then. June/July is also do-able might be rather hot.

Re: Mexico City --

October may be the pick of the months: the rains of summer have abated, everything is still green, smog is at its lowest levels, and the Day of the Dead provides a real highlight. [Lonely Planet - Mexico City]

  • High / Low Seasons
  • Flights
  • People's availability
  • Bank balances
  • Annual Leave

How long we are going for

Should become evident based on what to see and do - probably 2 weeks as per usual but maybe a touch more

What to see /do

  • Read through some organised tours in this area
  • Consult wikipedia / virtualtourist.com
  • Google Maps
  • Organise an initial meeting in the Shoulder of Mutton

Comments

Matt: According to Cyril & Nick at work, Cancun is "a hole", Americanised, touristy, Burger Kings... But a few miles south is a nice town...
