New page

The reality and significance of worldwide reports about vanishing honey bees is starting to hit home as the repercussions are felt across agricultural societies. If nothing is done it's estimated that approximately one-third of food production in the world will be lost as over a hundred species of crops depend on pollination and bees provide this extremely vital service.

Throughout history beehives have survived plagues by many kinds of diseases, but the current strand of disease is very different. In the past CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) was the main threat to bees but latest research has discovered there are about 14 kinds of viruses that are now causing huge fatalities and these have become more complex and the early symptoms are much different and somehow causes bees not to return to their hives.

Apart from viruses and parasites threatening bees existence, human being are somewhere in the mix in the decimation of these valuable little creatures. Pesticides are really killing bees by the thousands; neonnicotinoid chemicals applied on seeds are able to travel through the actual stem of a plant and leave the deadly chemical residue that contaminate pollen. When bees forage on these plants they become paralysed and disorientated, the end result is death.

During the 90's some European countries like France, Germany, Slovenia & Italy found that these pesticides impaired bees, distorting their navigational senses making foraging difficult and thus a ban was imposed on using these chemicals. Further more in 2008 Germany suspended the sales of eight neonicotinoid products after it was discovered that two-thirds of honeybees had died in the Baden-Wrttemberg region following the use of clothian pesticide.

My wish is that most countries of the world could take up after Europe and do something that can yield positive outcomes. Most European countries have take action and established what they termed "recovery zones" for bees in their continent.

These recovery zones are simply vast areas free of chemical pesticides and a diversity of healthy plants that are rich in nectar and pollen are available for the bees to use however they see fit and this is implemented as ruled by the European Parliament with the intension of avoiding a catastrophe. Other places like Australia are breeding healthy bees and they're exported to many parts of the world to help with pollination of crops

It's undeniable that bees have a huge role to play in maintaining the equilibrium of the planet by pollinating crops which humans and other species depend on. I believe it was Albert Einstein who warned us that if bees were to vanish off the face of the planet, human beings would follow within four years and most other living organism of this planet.

A life without plants like flowers, maize, wheat, a fruit etc. is just inconceivable. This should be more than enough reasons for someone who's been looking to take up beekeeping to go ahead and just do it. If psychological & financial rewards aren't enough of a driving force then social responsibility should really give you a nudge in the right direction. There's just no time to waste take those positive step forward and do your bit to prevent the collapse of life as we know it.
